The extracts from the Butcher’s Broom root have quite a long enriching history. This hearty, broad leaf evergreen shrub belongs to the asparagus family, reaching knee height with course texture and red berries. Native to the forests of Europe, Butcher’s Broom earned its name as a make-shift broom to clean and sweep butcher blocks due to the convenient stiff texture of the leaves. The twigs were tightly fastened and made good use for cleaning chimneys. The prickly leaves were jagged enough to handle the job, not realizing the employment of the plant would soon serve for its valuable skin properties.
In the 17th century, with trial and error, an English Herbalist discovered the Butcher’s Broom plant including the root, has many wonderful characteristics.
