Cleaning Sea Sponges: Sea Sponges are naturally stiff when dry and become soft when wet. Inspect the sponge for sea particles. Natural sponges may occasionally contain small shells or coral fragments. Washing before use is recommended. Using a 1-1 ratio of water and hydrogen peroxide will clean the sponge if it becomes discolored. A few drops of tea tree essential oil in 1 cup of warm water is an effective germicide and will eliminate any odors in the sea sponge. Another method of 1 Tablespoon white vinegar and 1 cup of water will also be helpful in maintaining your sponge. Color of the sea sponge may vary within the sponge itself.
